Theater Art Gallery APRIL ARTIST RECEPTION/SHOW

The Theater Art Gallery in Yuba City opens its April exhibit on Thursday, April 4, with a welcoming Artist Reception from 5 - 7 pm. The event is free, offering complimentary refreshments. Our guest artists are ALAN HANLEY, whose vivid oil pastel and pencil drawings are featured in this month’s show, and ceramic artist NIKKI PEARSON of Clay Hippie Ceramics in Sutter. The art show and sale runs from April 4 through April 27. The Theater Art Gallery is located under the striped awning at 756 Plumas Street, next to the Sutter Theater. Gallery hours are Thurs through Sat 12 - 5 pm, and Wed by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Visit us at www.suttertheater.org or on Facebook.

After graduating from Quincy High School, ALAN  HANLEY served in the US Navy for eight years and earned a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. A recipient of many awards and scholarships for painting, he went on to receive a MFA degree from San Francisco Art Institute. Since then, he has shown his work in many Northern California art galleries. Alan also has been an art instructor at Yuba College, Tierra Buena, and Gray Avenue Middle School. In October of 2017, Alan lost everything--his home and all his accumulated artwork, tools, and supplies--in the Cascade fire in Loma Rica. With few materials available to him, Alan began to create art on paper with images of what remained in the ashes. His intention was to show a mere glimpse of what a disaster does. His work beckons the viewer to a time in our recent past. After all Alan has endured, he is extremely upbeat and optimistic and continues to make art with paint, wood, and stone. For him, the magic is in the “doing,” the making of a piece In this way, he is able to fuse his inner feelings and reactions to those feelings in an exhibit of artistic beauty and relevance.

Six years ago NIKKI PEARSON took her first ceramics class and fell in love with it as soon as she put the clay in her hands. Never before had she had the opportunity to touch clay in the raw, but she was immediately taken by it. She was searching for a creative outlet to help her manage her emotional highs and lows, and gratefully ceramics was the key. Her husband, son, and friends built a tiny studio for her in their back yard--a haven for her to create and tap into her inner spirit. Even though it is often ceiling-high with glazes, supplies, and pots, her studio is her favorite place in the world to be. It never feels crowded to her, and there are no limits or boundaries for her when Nikki is elbows-deep in clay.

The Theater Art Gallery is open every week, Thursday through Saturday, from noon to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Proceeds from The Theater Art Gallery benefit the Sutter Performing Arts Association’s effort to renovate the Sutter Theater, turning it into a viable community center.  For more information, please visit our website at:  www.suttertheater.org, or visit us on Facebook.

Theater Art Gallery MAY Artist Reception/Show

In May, The Theater Art Gallery in Yuba City presents paintings by ALEXANDRA  SPROWLS and metal/wood sculptures by LARRY “DUDE” BARTOS-GREEN. The exhibit opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday, May 2, from 5 - 7 pm. The event is free offering complimentary refreshments. The art show and sale runs from May 2 through May 31.

Art instructor and art club advisor at River Valley High School, ALEXANDRA  SPROWLS has been teaching drawing and painting for the last eighteen years in the Yuba City Unified School District and at Butte College. She received her B.A. in Studio Art from California State University, Chico, and her M.A. in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries, most recently in the new Painting and Sculpture Outpost in Marysville. Ranging from the abstract to images of land and the natural world, Alexandra explores sense of place through memory and internalized states. As she layers paint on canvas to create bright forms of local haunts, her work captures the regeneration of nature after the ravages of fire and flood. To be in nature, surrounded by recordings of time, is where she is most inspired.

As a child living a mile outside the gold field town of Hammonton, LARRY “DUDE” BARTOS - GREEN spent many hours alongside his twin brother working with their hands and using their imaginations to create toys out of scrap metal and wood. During their senior year of high school they joined the Naval Reserve for an eight year hitch. It’s no surprise that his vocation became metalworking--first as a machinist in a heavy job shop, and then, as an instructor making a career of teaching machinist training and welding fabrication at Marysville and Yuba City High Schools, and night classes at Yuba College. After retirement, Dude and his wife traveled to Canada, Alaska, Europe, and South Dakota to visit Dude’s Czech relatives. Dude’s surname “Bartos” belongs to his mother’s side of the family living in the Czech Republic. Inspired by his travels, Dude began making metal art representing the birds and animals in our local area--salmon, cranes, herons, and dragonflies. As his outdoor metal/wood sculptures age, weathering and lichen growth add an unique quality to each one.
